Do I need a tool to make the buttons?

Yes, you need a cover button tool for each size.

What does #20 or #30 mean?

This is how fabric buttons (and upholstery buttons) are measured. Instead of using inches, buttons are often measured in lignes. Ligne is an international standard for measuring a button size. In the 9th century the term came into use among German button makers, where it was used to measure the diameter of buttons. The consensus definition was that a ligne was the measurement of a round wick, folded flat. One ligne measures roughly 1/40th of an inch. So a button that is a size 20 is a half inch.

How big are the buttons?

We carry seven different sizes of fabric buttons. Here is a list of the sizes.
#20 = 1/2″
#24 = 5/8″
#30 = 3/4″
#36 = 7/8″
#45 = 1-1/8″
#60 = 1-1/2″
#75 = 1-7/8″

How thick of fabric can I use?

It depends on the size of button. The smaller buttons do not handle thick fabric very well. The larger the button, the thicker the fabric you can use.
